Coming Home to Begin Something New.

I met Erin and Matt through Alex Rich after Matt began looking for a photographer to help preserve a surprise proposal during one of their visits to St. Louis. Although they now live in the Bay Area, both of them grew up here, making the city a meaningful place to begin their engagement.
Matt chose the Jewel Box in Forest Park for the proposal and worked with me to make sure Erin had no idea what was waiting for her. Because neither of them had met me before, I could blend naturally into the surroundings and photograph from a distance without drawing attention to myself.
That anonymity allowed the moment to remain completely theirs. Erin’s surprise, the emotion of Matt asking the question, and the joy immediately afterward unfolded without interruption or awareness of the camera. I was able to preserve the experience exactly as it happened rather than asking them to recreate something that could only ever feel that genuine once.
After revealing myself, we created portraits around the Jewel Box while the excitement was still fresh. The photographs carry the feeling of two people returning to the city that shaped them and leaving with an entirely new chapter ahead.
