2022

By 2022, Muhammad’s work was expanding far beyond his own releases. The artist, organizer, mentor, and community builder were becoming increasingly inseparable as he found new ways to create opportunities for the people and city around him.

One of the year’s largest developments came through St. Louis CITY SC. Muhammad helped imagine and create the role of Director of Musical Experience, connecting the identity of the new club with the musicians, sounds, and culture of St. Louis. It was not simply a position he stepped into—it was an idea he helped turn into something real.

At the time, I was living in Columbia, which made it difficult to be present for every performance, meeting, and milestone. Our collaboration had to adapt to distance and Muhammad’s rapidly expanding responsibilities, but I continued documenting him whenever our paths aligned.

On October 1, Muhammad received a proclamation during Grove Fest recognizing his impact on St. Louis. The moment honored more than his career as a musician. It acknowledged the larger role he had grown into as a cultural connector, advocate, mentor, and builder within the city.

This period also saw MVSTERCAMP begin taking clearer shape. The platform brought together many of the values that had defined Muhammad’s work from the beginning: artist development, education, honest feedback, access to resources, performance opportunities, and the belief that success becomes more meaningful when it is shared.

Between those public milestones, we continued preserving the quieter parts of the story—portraits, performances, studio life, conversations, family, and the ordinary moments that kept our friendship grounded while everything around Muhammad continued growing.

Looking back, 2022 was the year he began creating roles and systems that had not previously existed—not only finding a place within St. Louis culture, but helping shape what that culture could become.
