Turning Emotion Into Sound.

Turning Emotion Into Sound.

Alex Oren

Alex Oren is a St. Louis-born artist, producer, songwriter, and audio engineer whose music moves between alternative R&B, contemporary soul, and trap-influenced production. By writing, producing, and engineering his own records, he is able to shape every layer of the experience—from the melodies and vocals to the heavy 808s, guitar, textures, and detailed sound design surrounding them. His work is rooted in raw emotion, transforming personal experiences into music that allows listeners to recognize pieces of themselves within it.

Alex is also one of the most talented producers I have ever met. Watching him work introduced me to sounds, textures, and possibilities I did not know could exist. He could take an initial idea and transform it into something completely unexpected, experimenting with atmosphere, structure, emotion, and sonic detail until every record developed an identity of its own. Because he remains involved in every stage of the process, each finished piece carries his perspective from beginning to end.

I met Alex through Keaton D. Jones while helping shoot one of his earliest music videos. What began as a single production quickly became a close friendship and an introduction to a much larger creative community. Through Alex, we connected with artists including Jack Spear and Naaja while meeting many of the musicians and collaborators who were helping shape a new generation of St. Louis music.

Over time, I had the opportunity to photograph Alex through several stages of that growth—from early music videos and portraits to performances, collaborations, and the everyday moments surrounding the work. These photographs preserve more than the public image of an artist. They document a period when we were all learning together, creating with whatever resources were available, and building friendships that extended far beyond a single project.

Alex eventually carried that foundation into Los Angeles, where he has continued developing his music, production work, and creative community on a larger stage. His path has expanded considerably since those early St. Louis sessions, but the same qualities remain at the center of everything he creates: emotional honesty, remarkable creative instinct, experimentation, persistence, and a refusal to wait for permission to make something new.

Before the stages grew larger, there were rooms full of friends figuring it out together.
