Mastering the Secrets of the Game
Talent may begin an artist’s journey, but building a sustainable career requires an understanding of the business surrounding the work. Mastering the Secrets of the Game was created by MVSTERCAMP in partnership with The Thompson Rose Agency as a free, monthly workshop series designed to give musicians and creatives the knowledge needed to move through the industry with greater ownership, confidence, and strategy.
Running from May through December 2025, the classroom-based series addressed the parts of a creative career that artists are often expected to understand without ever being formally taught. Sessions explored music-business fundamentals, copyright and royalty registration, contracts, financial planning, distribution, touring, branding, media training, monetization, networking, and long-term career development. Rather than separating creativity from entrepreneurship, the program encouraged participants to treat their work as both an artistic practice and a business worth protecting.
I documented the series from inside the classroom, preserving the instructors, conversations, questions, exercises, and moments when unfamiliar information began to create new possibilities. The photographs and films focus not only on who was speaking, but on the exchange of knowledge occurring throughout the room—the attention, reflection, discussion, and relationships that made each class meaningful.
Together, this collection documents artists learning how to protect what they create, recognize the value of their work, and make more informed decisions about the careers they are building.
